Cast and Characters

Hank Barlow 72

St. Pancrasse, France

Our driver, Mat’s dad, founder of Mountain Bike Magazine, and Mountain Bike Hall of Famer. Hank moved to Aspen in the late 60’s, Crested Butte in the late 70’s, and Moab in the late 80’s. Then, after trailblazing a path throughout the Western US’s skiing and mountain biking hotspots, he moved to the old world in the mid 90s, setting up camp in the mountains above Grenoble, France. He’s been there ever since, riding, exploring, and piecing together some of the craziest routes you’ve ever seen on drop bars.

Mat Barlow 34

Boulder, Colorado

Photographer, videographer, and co-owner of Vecchio’s bike shop in Boulder, Colorado. Grew up in Crested Butte Colorado and Moab Utah before moving to Boulder. “Barlow” is the loose thread that weaves everyone’s stories together on this trip. There’s basically nothing Mat likes in the world more than exploring and piecing together epic routes to make his buddies smile. And he thought he was pretty handy at it before experiencing The Wizard’s guiding skills.

Evan Fry 47

Boulder, Colorado

Advertising superstar from Boulder Colorado. Former partner in Crispin Porter and Bogusky, co-founder of Victors and Spoils. Founder and boss man at Fry. From Salem, Oregon, a free-rider at heart that will huck his bike farther than the rest of us even contemplate. Lover of all animals except asshole humans, master of the Mcguiver-like dark arts of plugging tubeless tires.

Bob Guerrero 30

Portland, Oregon

Advertising producer at Wieden and Kennedy in Portland. From Boulder, Colorado. Breauxdureaux’s resident millennial and answer man for how to make Snapchat work. Not only did Bob only start riding mountain bikes less than 5 years ago, he broke his elbow 5 weeks before the trip so he’s also the winner of the Harden the Fuck Up Prize. Although we’re not sure if that makes up for 62 year old Scot Nicol showing him the way up most climbs….

Steve Lewis 50

Boulder, Colorado

Nebraska born, Boulder based wine and olive oil importer from Italy and Spain. Steve has visited Europe at least twice a year for the past 2 decades, but always for work and never for a biking trip. It’s a little known fact that you can pretty much walk into any fine food or wine establishment in Italy, boldly pronounce “sono Steve Lewis” (I am Steve Lewis) and magically magnums of Nebbiolo will immediately start uncorking themselves. Earlier this spring Steve turned 50 years old, and decided riding the Alps was a hell of a way to celebrate.

Scot Nicol 62

Santa Rosa, California

Ibis Cycles founder, Mountain Bike Hall of Fame inductee, and all around legend. Scot was one of the original pioneers of mountain biking, building Ibis frames by hand at his shop in Sebastopol that changed the bike world. After selling and later reacquiring Ibis he now helps head and keep Ibis at the technological forefront of the sport. Scot also reluctantly held the title of oldest rider on the mountain bike rides, although other younger members of Breauxdureaux will be quick to point out he sure as hell isn’t the slowest.

Mark Sevenoff 47

Moab, Utah

Eternal youth and cycling badass, Mark Sevenoff, with his wife Ashley, own and manage Western Spirit Cycling Adventures, one of the west’s premier cycling outfitters, as well as Outerbike, a series of consumer focused demo events where consumers from all over the world get the chance to ride the year’s latest and best bikes in killer venues like Moab, Whistler and Crested Butte. Mark is one of the best guides you could ever hope to have take you into the wilderness, but for this trip he was happier than a Minion ripping French loam to not be in charge.

Blaise Varien 54

Chamonix, France

By day 3 of Breauxdureaux the group had naturally coalesced around calling Blaise ‘the wizard’  because of his otherworldly ability to navigate a seemingly un-memorizable maze of roads, paths, singletracks, goat trails, and once in a while, landscapes that seemed to have lost the trail altogether. Not only that, at 54, he could pretty much drop any of us on demand up or down, and then consume beer at a rate later that night that made the rest of us look like 12 year olds tasting suds for the first time. 8 or so years ago Blaise took Mat out in Chamonix for the best day of skiing he’d ever had in his life, and this summer he selfishly also claimed the best day of mountain biking in his life, at least 5 times….
